The Mental Wellness Center (MWC) seeks a visionary and emotionally intelligent Chief Executive Officer to lead the organization at a pivotal moment for mental health in Santa Barbara County. The CEO will partner closely with the Board of Directors and a dedicated Leadership Team to shape the organization’s next chapter—refining its strategic direction, deepening its community impact, and ensuring long-term financial health. About the Mental Wellness Center

The Mental Wellness Center is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals and families impacted by mental illness through education, housing, and community-based services. MWC plays a critical role in the region’s mental health ecosystem, working collaboratively with public agencies, healthcare providers, and community partners to create a more responsive and compassionate continuum of care.

Strategic Leadership Priorities

The next CEO will focus on three interconnected priorities:

Deepening Community Impact
Refine and evolve MWC’s service model to address critical gaps in the mental health continuum, ensuring programs are responsive, effective, and aligned with community needs.

Strengthening Voice and Influence
Elevate MWC’s visibility and leadership across Santa Barbara County, positioning the organization as a trusted partner and advocate in advancing mental wellness.

Ensuring Financial Sustainability
Build and diversify revenue streams—including philanthropy, public funding, and earned income—to support long-term organizational strength and growth.

Leadership Responsibilities

Vision & Strategy

  • Set a clear and compelling vision that aligns mission, strategy, and organizational priorities
  • Partner with the Board and Leadership Team to advance strategic initiatives and organizational growth
  • Anticipate emerging trends and position MWC to respond proactively

External Leadership & Fundraising

  • Serve as MWC’s primary ambassador, building relationships with donors, partners, and public leaders
  • Partner with the Chief Advancement Officer to lead fundraising efforts across multiple revenue streams
  • Strengthen the organization’s brand through compelling storytelling and communication of impact

Organizational & Financial Stewardship

  • Ensure the financial health of a $6M+ organization through strong planning, oversight, and accountability
  • Oversee operational excellence across systems, including finance, HR, IT, and facilities
  • Champion data-informed decision-making and performance management

People & Culture

  • Attract, develop and lead a high-performing, mission-driven team
  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative culture rooted in empathy, accountability, and continuous learning
  • Support staff well-being and professional growth in a demanding service environment

Board Partnership & Governance

  • Build a strong, transparent partnership with the Board of Directors
  • Support effective governance, including strategy, oversight, and board engagement
  • Provide clear and timely updates on organizational performance and key opportunities

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a values-driven, relationship-centered leader who brings both strategic insight and operational discipline. They are equally comfortable setting vision, building partnerships, and ensuring strong execution.

Key Qualifications

  • Significant senior leadership experience, including experience leading complex organizations or initiatives
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising and external engagement, including major donors and institutional funding
  • Strong financial acumen and experience overseeing organizational performance
  • Proven ability to build, lead, and inspire high-performing teams
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage diverse stakeholders
  • Experience using data and metrics to guide decisions and improve outcomes

Preferred Experience

  • Background in behavioral health, mental health, or human services
  • Familiarity with public funding and government partnerships
  • Knowledge of the Santa Barbara County community and philanthropic landscape
  • Advanced degree in a relevant field

Compensation & Location

This is a full-time, exempt position based in Santa Barbara, California. The salary range for this role is $175,000–$225,000, commensurate with experience.
