This year, the Mental Wellness Center was not able to host our annual Mental Health Arts Festival. We know how much the festival means to our participating artists and community members and so we decided to do things a little differently this year and decided on creating something special for you all until we can join safely in 2022.
This fall, to honor both our artists and annual Mental Health Arts Festival, the Mental Wellness Center created a very special 2022 wall calendar. 14 local artists and their artwork are featured in this year’s calendar, which makes for a great stocking stuffer this holiday season! The Mental Wellness Center will host our 28th Mental Health Arts Festival at De La Guerra Plaza on Saturday, July 16, 2022. This event honors the work of local artists living with mental illness, and celebrates the power of creative expression. Each year, more than 50 local artists participate and hundreds of community members attend this free community event hosted by the Mental Wellness Center. In addition to artists exhibiting paintings, drawings, sculptures, jewelry, and arts and crafts, the festival also features poetry and music.
The event is designed to raise awareness and reduce stigma of mental illness while showcasing the talents and identities of people affected by mental health diagnoses. “Beyond just being an arts festival, this event offers a unique opportunity for individuals living with mental illness to exhibit their creative talents, enhance their self-esteem, and be recognized as productive and valuable members of our community,” said Darcy Keep, Mental Wellness Center Board Member and Arts Festival Committee Chair.
2022 marks the 28th anniversary of the festival which has become a longstanding Santa Barbara tradition. We hope to see you at De La Guerra Plaza on Saturday, July 16, 2022.
